The Deafening Sound of Silence

It was only a few weeks ago when I passed St Joseph's as the congregation ebbed away after Sunday Mass, smiling faces, hugs and handshakes, the slamming of a car door and waves through a window, I have to confess to a pang of guilt as I passed the church doors. I hadn't until now linked the two events, why would I, after all, the only thing both have in common is that they took place less than half a mile apart, well that and the subject of worship. Don't get me wrong I am not in any way questioning the power of worship, in fact quite the opposite, its more about how I felt as I passed on by, as if somehow the message that others had received that morning would be lost on me, but then mysterious ways and all of that, and who said worship required a drafty old building with damp walls and vaulted ceilings, no I was on my way to join the Saturday congregation, those that worshipped from afar, those that need the comforting sound of elevator music. Ok, not making sense let me explain. I was doing another book signing event, the last in fact of several I had done recently and was looking forward to the break having been travelling every weekend for several months and perhaps not least as this was in the city where my book began, the opening page, the French Quarter just down the street from where I stood. It turned out to be a great day, not only because I was able to sign so many books but because of the wonderful people I met who came over to say hello, chatting with me as if an old friend, telling me their stories, some buying books before their afternoon cruise, their ship docked at the very same quay, the White Star Line berth 44 that Titanic left from a hundred years before, others buying it for a school project, others for book clubs, one chap was leaving the UK to start a new life in America and wanted to read it on the flight, holiday makers, avid readers or those just curious enough to say hello and too polite not to leave without a copy; I met them all that day but it would be what happened as I was packing up to leave that would stay with me forever.  I had almost finished and was taking down one of the backdrop banners when they came over to say hello, a lovely couple in their very early sixties I think but couldn't be sure, smiling and holding hands they looked the picture of happiness. I can't remember how we started talking but I know during the conversation I read them the synopsis on the back of the book and they listened as if nothing else around them mattered, I remember glancing up from the page and could feel the intensity, as I made my way to the final few lines:

A Momentary Pause

I always head for the automatic doors, it's just what I do, and perhaps like some of you I catch my own reflection in the reinforced glass wall, before the sound of the motor and that gentle reassuring hum, opening both sides, welcoming me in, in from the cold, the shopping mall the high altar and all without touching, without the need for the routine tugging on my jacket sleeve slipping off my shoulder, pulled down around my fingers to grapple with the steel bar of a million unhygienic moments, waiting for me, waiting to ruin my day. It's ok, I know what you're thinking, and in truth I think the same thing too but nevertheless I hate the idea of it just the same; still I'm not alone, as witnessed when I sat in Costa coffee watching as the Saturday congregation flooded into the huge expanse of shopping heaven known as West Quay and watched as those like me veered away to avoid the manual doors, I have to confess it was as much a relief to know I'm not the only one, I scribble a note to myself, another of life's observations, along with the dirty knife I've been given to cut my cake.
